How to Care for Bearded Dragons

Housing -  A bearded dragon up to 12 inches long should be kept in a 20 gallon long tank. Once your bearded dragon gets passed 12 inches he/she should be kept in a minimum of a 40 gallon breeder tank, but the bigger the better. In the Bearded Dragons tank there should be a basking spot ( a log, or a big rock, etc.) underneath a 100-150 watt bulb depending on how far away the basking spot is from the bulb. On the cool side of the tank opposite to the basking spot should be a log or a hide for them to hide in for security. They may never need this, but it is good to have in the tank.

Substrate - Like Leopard Geckos, Bearded Dragons can easily be impacted. The safest and best look substrate is slate tile. Though Adult Bearded Dragon can live on sand, it is safer to use newspaper, repti carpet, tile, and paper towel.

Lighting and Heating -  Bearded Dragons have special lighting and heating needs. Because they are kept in tanks Bearded Dragons need what is called a UVB bulb. It provides artificial sunlight for your Bearded Dragon. This is a MUST have and it should stretch across the whole entire tank. Bearded Dragons will also need a Basking Bulb, depending on how far away your basking spot is from the bulb, you should be able to tell if you need a 75, 100, or 150 watt basking bulb. Try out 100 watt bulb and see if the temp. on the basking spot is in between 100-110 degrees, if so thats the bulb you need. If its over 100-110 degrees, try the 75 watt bulb, and if its under that, try a 150 watt bulb. Also, the UVB Bulb should be place within 6 inches of the basking spot =) . Your Bearded Dragon tank will also need a Reptile Heat Pad for night time. The heat pad should be kept on 24/7 and the Lights should be kept on 12/12 schedule. A heat pad can be purchased at your local pet store for about 20 dollars.

Food and Water - Juvenile to Semi-Adult Bearded Dragons will eat 20% greens and 80% insects, Adult Bearded Dragons will eat 80% veggies and 20% insects. Bearded Dragons will eat many types of insects including crickets, mealworms, super worms, roaches, wax worms, and more. Adult Bearded Dragon can also eat pinky mice. Feed Bearded Dragons food no bigger than the space between there eyes, and when they are young, I recommend a food processor be used to shred up their veggies into little peaces. Like Leopard Geckos you will need to dust their crickets with calcium with D3 1-2 times a week. Bearded Dragons can eat a variety of veggies but here are a few of my favorites mustard greens, kale, dandelion greens, collard greens, sweet potato, zucchini, and much more! Bearded Dragons get most of their water from vegetables. Bearded Dragons should also be sprayed everyday as juveniles on their head and and a every other day as adults. Some Bearded Dragons will drink from a water dish, but most won't. Always keep a fresh bowl of veggies and water dish in a Bearded Dragon's tank at all times. Juvenile Bearded Dragons should be fed insects everyday, twice a day, and adults should be fed insects every other day.

Temperature - Bearded Dragon's basking spots should be around 100-110 degrees, and on the cool side of their tank, the temperature should be around 80 degrees.
